How can a high school junior find a regular volunteer role that fits the school year instead of collecting random one-day activities?
My 16-year-old wants to volunteer somewhere consistently this fall. We keep finding one-off events, but they'd rather get to know a place and actually become useful. How do you approach organizations without me turning into the person emailing everyone for my teenager?
I'd have your teen write a short message with their age, interests and realistic availability. Then ask about duties, supervision and minimum commitment. Saying every Saturday when they can only manage twice a month won't help either side.
Work out the journey before promising a weekly slot. I'd rather my teen commit to something nearby and keep showing up than choose the most impressive-sounding place and spend the whole term trying to get there.
I'd let your teen send the follow-up too. You can help check the message, but learning to ask a clear question and wait for a reply is part of the experience I want them to have.
