How can you tell if a second grader needs math tutoring or if regrouping subtraction is just a rough patch that passes?
Subtraction with borrowing, regrouping, whatever they call it now... it's been rough at our house. She gets it one day and then the next day she's crying over the same kind of problem. Her teacher says she is close, but I'm starting to worry there's a real gap. When did you decide it was time for outside help?
For us I waited until I saw the same confusion with blocks, drawings, and money. If it is only a worksheet problem, maybe it is just the worksheet. But if place value is fuzzy in every format, a few tutoring sessions can help a lot.
I asked the teacher, is this a speed issue or a concept issue. That question helped. My son was slow but understood it, so we did short practice and stopped pushing speed.
