How can you tell whether a mixed-age Montessori classroom will suit a 4-year-old who usually lets bigger children take over?
We're considering a Montessori classroom for fall. My 4-year-old likes being around older children, but often gives up a toy or idea as soon as somebody bigger wants it. Is there something specific we should watch for in a mixed-age room, beyond whether everyone looks busy?
I'd watch what happens when two children want the same material. Does an adult notice the quieter child, or does the confident child always get their way? That's the moment I'd want to see, not just the children working separately.
For my preschooler, I'd want to know how they help a child say they're not finished. Not a speech about standing up for yourself, just an adult nearby who can help with the words and make sure they're heard.
