How do you get ready for your first IEP meeting when you’re afraid you’ll just sit there nodding and miss stuff?
The evaluation is done and now we have our first IEP meeting for speech and some developmental delays. I’m not trying to be a difficult parent, but I also don’t want to sit there confused and sign stuff I don’t understand. What should I bring, ask, or write down?
Bring another adult if you can. My husband just took notes because I was emotional and could not catch all the minutes and goals.
Ask what the goal looks like during a normal school day. Like if the goal is expressive language, ask what they want to see at snack, playtime, circle time. Real examples help.
You can say, I need time to read this before signing. That is allowed. I wish someone told me that before my first meeting.
Ask who provides each service, how often, and where. I had no idea push-in and pull-out were different until I asked.
