How do you handle changed pickup plans for a new ninth grader when their phone is stored away during the school day?
My 14-year-old is starting high school and we're trying to stop relying on last-minute texts. Sometimes my work runs late or an activity changes. What plan would you make before the first day so they know what to do without checking a phone during school?
Get the school's actual contact and dismissal procedures. NYCPS says schools must provide an emergency contact method, and each school handles returning devices under its own plan. We agreed that an unanswered message does not automatically change the plan. I'd choose one safe, school-approved default place and explain who your child checks with if the expected adult isn't there.
Write down the important numbers somewhere besides the phone. My teen knows mine but not everyone else's. I'd keep it simple enough to find without digging through a whole folder at dismissal.
I'd separate genuine emergencies from ordinary scheduling changes. For the ordinary ones, a cutoff time for agreeing the day's plan would stop you both expecting the other person to catch a message at the last second.
