How do you know if debate is a good fit for a middle schooler who loves arguing but takes disagreement personally?
My 12 year old argues every point at home, and honestly he is pretty good at it. But he also gets upset when challenged. Someone suggested debate club. Could that teach respectful disagreement, or will it just make him more intense?
Debate helped my son because there were rules and time limits. At home he could argue forever. In debate he had to use evidence and stop talking eventually.
Coach culture matters. Some debate rooms reward being aggressive. I would watch once or ask how they handle beginners.
It was humbling for my daughter. She learned loud is not the same as persuasive, but the first losses were rough.
If debate feels too much, try public speaking or model UN first. Similar skills, a different vibe.
