How do you make a fall nature walk on Staten Island interesting for a 10-year-old who wants more than being told to look at the leaves?
My 10-year-old wants weekend outings but groans at the word walk. I'd like to try the Greenbelt this fall without turning it into a forced science lesson. What gives an older elementary kid something to do while still leaving room to just enjoy being outside?
Let them choose a tiny mission, like photographing three different tree textures or recording interesting sounds. My kid likes having something to notice, but loses interest if I arrive with twelve learning objectives and a clipboard.
I'd pick the route together from the official trail map and agree on a turnaround point.
