How do you narrow NYC high school visits with an eighth grader when every open house adds another school to an already huge list?
My 13-year-old and I are starting a high school list and it's getting ridiculous. Different programs, different boroughs, different reasons a school sounds good. How do you decide which visits are worth doing without spending the whole fall touring and arguing?
I'd have your child choose three things they want in an ordinary school day before looking at another open house. Not the school's reputation. Things like the kind of work, activities, atmosphere or how much traveling they can tolerate.
Separate can't work from might not be ideal. A journey your family can't manage belongs in the first group. An unfamiliar building or one club they haven't heard of probably belongs in the second. That distinction would help me cut the list.
I'd ask what you need the visit to answer. If you can't name a question beyond let's see it, maybe do more reading first. We don't have enough weekends to collect impressions of every building.
Let your teen cross something off too, provided they explain why. I wouldn't give myself unlimited vetoes while making them defend every preference. They're the one who has to spend the school day there.
Check the current admissions instructions before planning around a visit. I'd want to know whether there are separate requirements for the specific program, not assume attending an open house completes anything.
After a visit, write two or three notes before talking to other families. I'd want to preserve my child's reaction instead of having it replaced by the loudest parent's opinion on the way home.
Leave some breathing room in the calendar. My kid would not give useful feedback after three rushed visits and a missed lunch. I'd rather understand a smaller shortlist properly than see every option badly.
