Is homework every night too much for pre-K, or are we supposed to actually do all these tracing sheets?

Our pre-K sends home handwriting and number sheets 4 nights a week. My kid is 4, tired, and would much rather play. I feel guilty skipping it, but it also seems like a lot? Did other parents actually do pre-K homework, or mostly just read and play after school?

I asked directly if it was required and the teacher said no, it was practice for families who wanted it. After that we stopped forcing it. We read books and counted blueberries instead.

At 4 I would not fight over worksheets. If they enjoy it, fine. If they cry, I would write a note saying we read together tonight. That is more valuable than making them hate pencils.

We did one line and called it done. Sometimes teachers send home a whole page because it is easy to photocopy, not because every kid needs every bit.
