What helps an eighth grader tell a tutor they still don't understand instead of nodding through the lesson and telling you afterward?
My 13-year-old says tutoring is fine while the tutor is there, then tells me later that a whole section didn't make sense. I don't want to sit in and speak for them every week. How can I help them ask for a different explanation without making it a big embarrassing thing?
I'd give them a sentence that's more specific than I don't get it, like I followed you until this step. My kid finds it easier to point to where they got lost than announce that the whole explanation failed.
Tell the tutor about the pattern privately, with your child's knowledge, and ask how they'll check understanding during lessons. I wouldn't leave the entire burden on a child who's already worried about seeming difficult.
Your child could mark a question during the session and return to it before the end. I'd agree that system with the tutor first so it doesn't become another thing the child has to explain while feeling awkward.
I'd ask the tutor to leave time for the child to explain one idea back in their own words. Not as a gotcha. I want an ordinary chance for confusion to show up before everyone says goodbye.
