What is the everyday difference between an IEP and a 504 plan for a child with attention and writing struggles?
I keep hearing IEP and 504, and I'm still confused. My child has attention issues and writing is hard, but he is not failing. In normal school life, what changes with each plan, and how do you know what to ask the school about?
Our 504 was accommodations, like breaks, seating, extra time, less copying. The IEP added specialized instruction and goals. That was the practical difference for us.
My daughter has a 504 for ADHD and it is enough right now. She does not need pull out teaching, she needs access supports.
My son has an IEP for reading because he needs direct instruction. There are goals and service minutes, not just accommodations.
