What should a junior check in the first weeks of an AP class to tell whether the workload is manageable rather than just unfamiliar?
My 16-year-old is excited about an AP class but keeps hearing horror stories about the reading. I don't want to tell them to drop it before they've even started, or insist they stay no matter what. What would you track early so the decision isn't based on one rough night?
I'd record actual time spent for a little while, including the point where useful work turns into staring at the page. Then bring that to the teacher with specific questions. A log of what happened is more useful to me than the course being described as impossible.
Ask the school early about the process and timing for discussing a course change. I'd want that information before there's a crisis, without treating getting the information as a decision to leave.
