What should parents do when a 5 year old reads early but still melts down over losing games and sharing toys?
People keep calling my daughter advanced because she reads chapter books at 5. But emotionally, she is still very much 5 — tears over sharing, losing, plan changes, all of it. How do I challenge her brain without expecting her to act older than she is?
This is common in our house too. Reading level does not equal coping level. We gave harder books but kept normal 5 year old expectations for feelings.
Dont let adults treat her like a mini teenager because she reads well. My son could explain volcanoes and still needed help with his shoes.
For school, ask for enrichment that stays with same-age peers if possible. Harder books or projects, not necessarily moving her socially older.
