What should we ask an IB high school about support for a new ninth grader who hasn't come from an IB middle school?
My 14-year-old is starting at a school with an IB pathway and some classmates seem very familiar with all the language already. We're new to it. What would you ask the school so we understand the expectations without trying to teach an entire system at home?
I'd ask which expectations apply to ninth grade right now and which belong later. I'd want examples of current assignments and how teachers introduce unfamiliar terms, rather than a big presentation about the final diploma years.
Find out who your child can ask when an instruction doesn't make sense. I would want a normal route for clarification, not the feeling that everyone else knows a secret vocabulary and you're supposed to pretend you do too.
