What would you do if your middle schooler showed you a mean group-chat screenshot but begged you not to identify them as the source?

My 12-year-old showed me messages making fun of another child before school has even started. They weren't writing the comments, but they were in the chat. I want an adult to know without turning my kid into the person everyone blames. How would you handle that conversation?

I wouldn't promise that nobody could ever work out who shared it. I'd say I will be careful, and we'll talk about what I plan to do. Then I'd ask the school how they can address the behavior without circulating the screenshot to a whole group of parents.

Please don't drop it into another parent chat. I'd keep the original for the appropriate school contact and avoid creating a second audience for the child who's being mocked. Your kid was right to bring it to you.

I'd also talk about what they can do for the targeted child that doesn't make a big public scene. A normal friendly message or sitting together later might feel more doable than confronting everyone in the chat.
