When is it actually worth starting SAT or ACT prep if my 10th grader is already stressed about everyone talking about tutors?
My sophomore came home worried because friends are already talking about SAT tutors. She’s a good student and also an anxious one. I want to be practical, not pretend tests don’t exist, but I really don’t want 10th grade to become test-prep year. When did your family start?
We did one diagnostic at the end of 10th grade, then real prep in junior year. That was enough information without months of stress.
If she is anxious, protect sleep and school habits first. Test prep on top of a tired kid can backfire.
My son did best with a shorter prep window, maybe 8 weeks. When we dragged it out, he got sick of it and scores did not move more.
Also ignore the parent panic if you can. Some families talk about tutors like it is a sport. It does not mean you are late.
Check test optional policies later when she has a college list, but dont build the whole plan around rumors. Just keep options open.
