When is it worth comparing the SAT and ACT again if a rising junior dislikes the test they've started preparing for?

My 16-year-old has done some SAT work over summer and keeps saying the ACT might suit them better. I can't tell if that's a sensible question or just wanting to escape practice. How would you compare the options without signing up for two full prep schedules?

I'd compare current official practice materials under reasonably similar conditions, then look at where the difficulty actually is. One tired evening versus a relaxed weekend wouldn't tell me much. I'd also ask your teen what specifically feels better about the other test.

Don't let money already spent be the only reason to continue. But I'd want more than my friend likes the other one before changing everything. Ask the tutor for a plain explanation of the tradeoffs without selling you another package.

I'd put a limit on the comparison period so it doesn't become another ongoing project. Decide what information you need, gather it, then make a plan your teen understands and can realistically follow.
