Where do you start when a new high school expects a ninth grader to carry books, lunch and a large instrument without clear storage?
My 14-year-old is starting high school and wants to continue cello. Between the backpack and instrument, the commute is looking awkward. Before we start dropping activities, what would you ask about school storage, lesson days or borrowing an instrument on site?
I'd start with the music department rather than buying a different bag. Ask what students on that instrument usually do and whether storage is available on the days you need it. I'd want permission and access details, not just yes, there's a cupboard.
Do a practice journey with the actual things they'll carry. We tried our school route empty-handed and it told us nothing about the annoying parts. Your teen might spot a better arrangement once they're the one handling the load.
