Which features would you look for in an ASL class for an 11-year-old who wants to have conversations, not just copy signs from videos?
My 11-year-old has become interested in ASL and wants a proper class. I'm seeing short video courses and a few live options, but I don't know how to judge them. What would you ask about the teacher, the age group and how children practice with one another?
I'd want a chance to ask about the teacher's ASL background and how they include Deaf perspectives and culture. For the lessons themselves, I'd look for interaction where the teacher can see and respond to the child, not only a video to imitate.
Ask what two beginners would be able to do together after a few sessions. I'd want to hear a simple conversation example, not a promise that they'll memorize a huge number of signs.
