Which kind of English tutoring helps a 10-year-old who chats easily but gets stuck on the vocabulary used in school assignments?
My 10-year-old can talk confidently in English, but school words like compare, explain and justify trip him up. Some tutors I've contacted focus on conversation, others jump straight to essay writing. What would you ask to find someone who works on the bit in between?
I'd bring two real assignments and ask how they'd teach your child to unpack the directions. A conversation lesson wouldn't address my concern if the hard part is understanding what an assignment is asking them to do.
Ask whether they can use material from the subjects your child is studying. I'd rather see those words explained in a science question or a reading task than have another disconnected list to memorize.
