Which parts of a first chess tournament should I prepare a 9-year-old for besides the actual games and possibly losing?
My 9-year-old plays chess happily and wants to try a tournament in the fall. I'm not aiming for a trophy. I'm wondering about waiting around, finding the right room and what parents can actually help with. What caught your family off guard the first time?
I'd get the organizer's parent instructions before explaining the day to your child. Where you can wait, how they find their next game, and who answers questions are the details I'd want. Don't promise you'll be right beside the board if that isn't allowed.
Plan something between rounds that isn't analyzing the last game. My kid doesn't want every mistake replayed while eating a snack. I'd let them decide whether they want to talk chess or switch their brain off for a bit.
Bring enough food for the day you might actually have, not the short outing you're imagining. I'd also check whether the schedule gives a definite finish or whether you need some flexibility.
